What is more pathetic, however, is that even I occasionally catch myself writing “would of,” “could of” or “should of” because of the phonetic similiarity to the would/could/should have contractions that we use in everyday speech. I almost always catch the error right away, but it is sobering to realize how informal speech patterns are starting to affect our written English. At least we haven’t yet descended to infinitive elisions like “gonna,” “wanna” and “gotta”–that would be a real disaster!
